Introduction
Sunrays wants to give you a Snack with Impact. They believe that passion, technology 🤖 and practices exist to make their goal a reality, it just takes the right company with the right community to make this kind of snacking the new normal. Sunrays is a produce brand dedicated to sustainability and delivering you tasty fresh fruit that’s not only good for you but the planet too. As Scrapp is a passionate company about waste and technology, there was immediate common ground. After meeting on Linkedin, Mikey & John Paap from Sunrays got together to understand better how they could work together.
The Challenge
Sunrays recently innovated with a home compostable tree fiber netting which replaced its non-recyclable plastic net counterpart. By making this switch, Sunrays hopes to reduce the total amount of waste sent to landfills. What seems like a simple decision can often be complicated. Composting infrastructure can be sparse and the materials they can accept vary. For example, a home composting bin may be able to accept home compostable packaging but will still reject it due to contamination concerns from plastic packaging that looks similar. Sunrays wanted to work with Scrapp to help understand how widely accepted home compostable packaging is across the USA. Sunrays had explored other options before Scrapp, but due to cost concerns, Scrapp was a great fit with their modular approach.
The Scrapp Experience
Scrapp served as a subject matter expert to help navigate the ever-changing space of recycling, composting, packaging, and circular economy issues. Mikey & John worked together to navigate product, location, and sales data to understand their waste footprint. For John, the moment Scrapp increased their snack’s impact was when their entire product line was uploaded into the Scrapp mobile app. This allowed all of their customers to scan the retail barcode to see how the product and packaging could be recycled, composted, or disposed of based on their location.

The Transformation
Sunrays now has over 25 products listed in Scrapp giving their customers easy and instantaneous access to proper disposal information. This has saved their customer success teams time while aligning with their mission to increase their snacks’ positive impact. The largest gain from Sunrays perspective was the confidence to market what to do with their packaging accurately and remain in compliance with the FTC green guides. The year they went with Scrapp, they won the category Excellence in Package Innovation and Sustainable Design at the PAC Global Awards!
Looking Forward
Looking forward Sunrays and Scrapp are looking to deepen the relationship by creating a comprehensive waste footprint for Sunrays while recommending zero-waste alternatives for the brand, that align with their mission. Sunrays products will continue to be in the Scrapp mobile app for many years as soon as you are in our system once, we keep you there. No recurring cost!
